About the area

Tynemouth

Tynemouth takes its name simply from its position at the north side of the mouth of the River Tyne, a headland that has been in use since at least the Iron Age and was likely the site of a Roman signal station. Its most significant early history centres on the priory founded on the headland in the Anglo-Saxon period, which grew into an important religious site said to hold the remains of several early kings, a heritage still reflected in the three crowns on North Tyneside's coat of arms. The site suffered repeated Viking raids before being restored, and around the end of the eleventh century a castle was added, turning the headland into one of the most heavily fortified positions on the north-east coast, valued for centuries for its defensive position guarding the Tyne. After the priory's dissolution in the sixteenth century, the site continued in military use, including as a coastal fort into the twentieth century, and is now cared for by English Heritage as Tynemouth Priory and Castle, one of the area's best-known landmarks.

Away from the headland, Tynemouth developed in the Victorian era into a fashionable seaside town, and much of its housing stock still reflects this period, with elegant terraces and villas giving it a more refined character than some neighbouring towns. Its coastline is a major draw, with the sandy expanse of Longsands and the more sheltered King Edward's Bay both popular with swimmers, surfers, and walkers, alongside Prior's Haven near the river mouth. The restored Victorian Tynemouth Metro station, home to a well-known weekend market, and the Collingwood Monument overlooking the river are further local landmarks. Tynemouth today is regarded as one of the more sought-after places to live in the area, prized for its coastal setting, period housing, and village-like high street.

Reviews From Tynemouth And Nearby

“Cheaper and faster than a skip hire would have been.”

They did the lifting and the sorting, and I did not have to stand over a skip for a fortnight.

Robert N. — Tynemouth

“Booked on the Monday, cleared by Thursday.”

No messing about with quotes that change on the day. They told me a price on the phone and that was what I paid.
