Gateshead sits on the south bank of the River Tyne directly opposite Newcastle, and its name has a long and debated history: the Venerable Bede referred to the settlement in the seventh century using a Latin phrase usually translated as "Goat's Head," possibly describing a headland where goats grazed, though another common explanation links the name to its position at the "head" of an important road, or "gate," approaching the river crossing. Archaeological evidence points to a small settlement here in Roman times, with the Roman road later known as Cade's Road passing through, while Bede also recorded a monastery in the area around the mid-seventh century. Gateshead's medieval development was shaped by the Prince-Bishops of Durham, who held authority over the town and granted it a charter in 1164; it remained notably smaller than Newcastle across the river and stayed within roughly its medieval boundaries until well into the 1830s, at one point successfully resisting an attempt by Newcastle merchants to formally annex it. From the medieval period onward coal mining was a central part of the local economy, growing substantially through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries alongside other heavy industries such as shipbuilding and glassmaking along the riverside, with industrial expansion bringing enclosure of former common land in the early 1800s and the opening of Windmill Hills as the town's first public park in 1861.

As heavy industry declined through the twentieth century, Gateshead became known instead for large-scale regeneration, particularly along its Quayside, which today includes the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in a converted flour mill, the Glasshouse International Centre for Music (formerly Sage Gateshead), and the Millennium Bridge linking it to Newcastle's Quayside. The town is also home to the Angel of the North sculpture, one of the region's most recognisable landmarks, and has run a public art programme since 1986. For residents today, Gateshead combines a mix of housing, good transport links into Newcastle, and easy access to surrounding countryside and green space.
