Washington
Washington takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon "Hwaesingatun," meaning the settlement of the people of Hwaesa, with the name recorded in an early form around 1096. Its most notable historical connection is to the ancestors of George Washington, first President of the United States: William de Wessyngton took the name of the estate after arriving in the area in the twelfth century, and his descendants lived there for several generations before the family later moved south to Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire. Washington Old Hall, a manor house rebuilt on the site of the original medieval hall and now cared for by the National Trust, survives today as a reminder of this connection and hosts commemorative events each year. Like much of the surrounding area, Washington developed through coal mining from the eighteenth century onward, with numerous pits worked locally; the former "F" Pit is preserved as a mining museum. A significant chemical industry also grew up in the town during the nineteenth century.
The most transformative period in Washington's modern history came in 1964, when it was designated a new town, leading to large-scale planned development of housing, roads and amenities organised around a series of distinct residential villages, a structure still visible in the town's layout today. Washington became part of the newly formed Tyne and Wear in 1974 and is now within the City of Sunderland. Its population grew substantially through the new town period as estates were built to house workers and families relocating to the area. Today Washington combines this legacy of planned housing with a strong industrial and manufacturing base, most notably the large Nissan car plant, alongside other major employers, and it is also known for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve and Washington Old Hall as visitor attractions. For residents, the town offers a wide range of predominantly post-1960s housing set within a well-established network of green spaces and local centres.
