Denton Burn takes its name from the stream, or "burn", that runs through the area, with "Denton" following a common regional place-name pattern indicating a settlement associated with a valley. Lying around four miles west of Newcastle city centre along the West Road corridor towards Carlisle, the area's most significant historical feature is a well-preserved stretch of Hadrian's Wall, including a surviving turret known as Denton Hall Turret, cared for by English Heritage, and the presumed remains of a buried milecastle beneath later housing. This section is notable as one of the first substantial visible lengths of the wall travelling west out of Newcastle, and it has attracted antiquarian interest for well over a century. Like many communities along Newcastle's western fringe, Denton Burn's more recent history is tied to coal mining, with Montagu Main Colliery operating in the vicinity for around two centuries before closing in the mid-20th century, and rows of former colliery housing, such as Caroline Pit Cottages, reflecting this industrial past.

The burn itself was known to flood periodically, a feature recorded in local photographs and accounts from the early 20th century onward. As mining wound down, Denton Burn developed into a residential suburb, with housing built up through the 20th century to serve Newcastle's westward growth. Today it is a settled, primarily residential area with a local library, shops, and green recreational space, along with several local schools, including St Bede's RC Primary, Broadwood Primary, and St Cuthbert's High School.
