Newcastle City Centre
Newcastle's story begins with the Romans, who built a fort and bridge called Pons Aelius on the River Tyne around AD 122, part of the Hadrian's Wall frontier. After Rome withdrew, the settlement became known as Monkchester before the Normans built a "new castle" here in 1080, giving the city its name. The stone keep that still stands today dates from the 1170s, with the Black Gate added in the mid-13th century, and sections of the medieval town wall survive nearby. Newcastle grew wealthy through coal, earning the phrase "carrying coals to Newcastle," and by the Industrial Revolution had become a major centre for shipbuilding, engineering and armaments along the Tyne. The city centre as it looks today owes much to Richard Grainger, who in the 1830s, working with architect John Dobson, redeveloped large areas into elegant Georgian and neoclassical streets, including Grey Street and the covered Grainger Market, an area now known as Grainger Town.
Newcastle was granted formal city status in 1882. Its population and built-up area expanded rapidly through the 19th century as heavy industry drew workers to the region. Today the city centre blends this Georgian and Victorian architecture with modern regeneration, particularly along the redeveloped Quayside, home to bars, restaurants and landmarks like the Millennium Bridge and the Sage Gateshead across the river. The centre remains the North East's principal hub for shopping, culture, nightlife and business, with Northumberland Street, the Grainger Market, and the historic bridges spanning the Tyne all forming part of daily life for residents and visitors, alongside a housing mix that increasingly includes city-centre apartments and converted historic buildings.

“Cheaper and faster than a skip hire would have been.”
They did the lifting and the sorting, and I did not have to stand over a skip for a fortnight.

“Booked on the Monday, cleared by Thursday.”
No messing about with quotes that change on the day. They told me a price on the phone and that was what I paid.
