Ryton
Ryton lies on the south bank of the Tyne to the west of Gateshead, in a position that made it vulnerable to Scottish raids in the medieval period; the village is said to have been burned during William Wallace's campaigns in the 1290s, and its church was plundered again during an invasion under David II of Scotland in the mid-fourteenth century. Coal was worked in the area from an early date, with rights to mine outside the village walls granted by Henry III in the thirteenth century, and industry expanded significantly from the eighteenth century, when the Ryton Company operated lead-smelting works later absorbed into the London Lead Company. Coal mining continued into the modern era, with the Stargate Pit opening around 1800 and, after a serious explosion in the 1820s, eventually operating until the early 1960s. During the Industrial Revolution, some wealthier residents built substantial houses in Ryton as a retreat from the smoke and crowding of Newcastle and Gateshead, giving parts of the village a more genteel character than some neighbouring industrial towns.
Following the decline of coal mining in the later twentieth century, Ryton became increasingly suburbanised and today functions largely as a residential area within Gateshead borough, with a village centre offering local shops and everyday amenities. Its best-known feature is Ryton Willows, a substantial local nature reserve along the Tyne recognised as a site of special scientific interest for its grassland, woodland and wildlife, forming part of the wider Tyne Riverside green corridor that residents use for walking and cycling. This combination of village-scale housing, accessible countryside and riverside open space gives Ryton a quieter, more rural feel than many parts of the Tyneside conurbation, while remaining within easy reach of Newcastle and the A1 corridor.

Got three quotes and theirs was not the cheapest, but it was the only one that did not change once the van arrived.
