About the area

Whickham

Whickham's name comes from Old English, generally understood to mean a settlement or estate marked by a quickset (hawthorn) hedge, and the village was already recorded in the Boldon Book survey of 1183, held by tenants of the Bishop of Durham. Its parish church, St Mary the Virgin, retains Norman features and a fourteenth-century tower, and the settlement's exposed position close to the Scottish border meant fortified buildings such as Hollinside manor were needed for defence during centuries of border unrest. From the medieval period onward, though, Whickham's real story is coal. Mining in the area expanded enormously between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as Tyneside's coal trade boomed, and the surrounding land became threaded with wagonways carrying coal down to the river, including the famous Causey Arch nearby, an early masonry railway bridge.

Coal wealth funded grand estates in and around Whickham, most notably Gibside, built by the Bowes family and now cared for by the National Trust, along with other mansions such as Axwell Hall and Ravensworth Castle, several of which later fell into decline or were demolished. As collieries closed through the twentieth century, Whickham transitioned into a residential town within Gateshead borough, and much of its former industrial land has since been landscaped or redeveloped. Today it retains a strong village identity, with a traditional high street, established Methodist chapels reflecting its nonconformist history, and a good deal of surrounding green belt and open countryside. Housing ranges from older village-centre properties to twentieth-century estates and more recent developments, making it popular with families and long-established residents alike, and its proximity to Gibside and the Derwent Valley gives it a notably rural, leafy character for a town so close to Newcastle and Gateshead.
