Wallsend
Wallsend takes its name directly from its position at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, where the Roman fort of Segedunum once stood guarding the point where the wall met the River Tyne. Archaeological evidence suggests the wall's defences continued down to the river shore itself, and the site has been extensively excavated, with Segedunum today preserved as a museum and viewing tower giving visitors an overview of the fort's layout, alongside a reconstructed Roman bath house nearby. After the Roman withdrawal, the area saw successive waves of Anglian and Viking influence before settling into a more stable agricultural community, later shaped, like much of Tyneside, by coal mining, with Wallsend Colliery working several pits from the late eighteenth century into the twentieth. It was shipbuilding, though, that defined Wallsend's character during its industrial peak: the Wigham Richardson yard, later part of the Swan Hunter group, built some of the most famous vessels of their eras, including the Blue Riband-winning liner RMS Mauretania and the RMS Carpathia, which rescued Titanic survivors, along with numerous naval and merchant ships through both World Wars and beyond, with shipbuilding continuing on the site until 2007.
This heritage is still visible in the town's identity today, reflected in bilingual Latin and English street signage referencing its Roman past and in the continuing presence of the Segedunum site as a visitor attraction. Wallsend expanded substantially with residential development through the twentieth century, particularly after the Second World War, and today is predominantly a residential town within North Tyneside, with a mix of terraced housing from its industrial heyday and later suburban estates. It is also known locally for Wallsend Boys Club, a footballing nursery that produced several notable professional players, and as the birthplace of the musician Sting, adding to a strong sense of local identity rooted in both its ancient and industrial past.

Three generations of stuff out of the loft and garage in one morning. Swept through before they left, which I did not expect.

“Made a horrible week a bit easier.”
Clearing a parent's house is never going to be pleasant, but they were patient, respectful, and set aside anything that looked like it mattered.
