Dinnington
Dinnington lies on the northern fringe of Newcastle upon Tyne, close to the Northumberland border, and the area has evidence of habitation stretching back to before the Iron Age. For much of its early history it was a small rural settlement, but from at least the early eighteenth century coal was worked in the surrounding countryside, and mining came to dominate local life. The Augusta Pit at Dinnington Colliery was sunk in 1867, and at the industry's height several collieries operated within a couple of miles of the village, shaping its economy and community for well over a century. As with many former colliery villages in the North East, the decline of deep coal mining through the twentieth century brought significant change. From the 1960s onward, and particularly in the final decades of the century, Dinnington was steadily transformed from a mining village into a commuter settlement, with new private housing estates built on land released from the Green Belt and on former colliery sites, adding a considerable number of new homes to what had been a compact village.
It became part of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne following local government reorganisation in 1974, despite sitting right on the county boundary with Northumberland. Today Dinnington is a mixed residential area combining older village housing with more recent suburban development, and it retains reminders of its industrial past alongside newer amenities. Nearby Big Waters, a nature reserve formed on land affected by historic mining subsidence, is a well-known local green space and a reminder of the area's colliery history. For residents, Dinnington offers a quieter, semi-rural setting within easy reach of both Newcastle and the Northumberland countryside, with a strong sense of community shaped by its village origins and its more recent growth as a family-friendly commuter area.
