Ponteland
Ponteland takes its name from the River Pont, on whose banks it stands; early spellings such as "Pont-Eland" and "Pont Ealand" reflect its position amid low-lying, once-marshy land beside the river. Christian worship has taken place on the site of St Mary's Church for over a thousand years, and the present building, largely thirteenth century with earlier Anglo-Saxon evidence, was the setting for a peace treaty between England and Scotland in 1244. A medieval castle once stood near the centre of the village, on the site now occupied by the Blackbird Inn, and was burned during Scottish border raids in 1388; the restored Pele Tower nearby, built in the early fourteenth century, originally served as a fortified vicarage. Despite this long history, Ponteland remained a small rural village for centuries, with only a few hundred residents recorded as late as the 1830s.
A light railway connection to Newcastle arrived in 1905, and the adjoining Darras Hall estate was laid out as a garden suburb in the early twentieth century, but substantial growth did not come until the 1950s and 60s, when new housing estates, schools and shopping facilities were built and the population expanded considerably. Today Ponteland is regarded as one of the more affluent settlements on the edge of Tyneside, known for its leafy streets, larger detached properties (particularly around Darras Hall, one of the largest private housing estates of its kind in Europe), golf courses and well-regarded schools. Its proximity to Newcastle Airport and easy access into Newcastle city centre make it a popular base for professionals and families. For residents, the village retains a distinct, semi-rural identity, with its historic church, pele tower and village green giving it a character quite different from the area's former mining communities.

I liked that they told me where things were actually going rather than just saying "we'll sort it."
